Life surrounded by inspired
kitsch

Herman
Broch, one of the most intuitive and original theorists of kitsch, said
that there is bad, good and inspired kitsch.. Of course kitsch in its
most inspired form represents an art tautology. That is why I am not
going to write about the art of kitsch, but about a certain standpoint in
life: The creation and the existence of kitsch wouldn't even be possible
without a "kitsch-man", who, in every segment of life, and even
in life itself - that is death - is searching for and finding a betrayal
of reality, authenticity and originality.
With
his first solo exhibition Dejan Kaludjerović /1972/, a senior
student at the Belgrade Academy of Fine Art in the class of professor
Čedomir Vasić (previously a student of the School of Visual
Arts in New York and the Belgrade Faculty for Applied Arts), states his
position on the totality of the tragedy in which we have been living for
more than 10 years. At the same time he is not judging, but merely
stating facts we are all aware of, using the poetics of kitsch.

Dejan
didn't choose kitsch to be funny or mocking, but to point out that all of
this could have happened only to "kitsch-men" and that
kitsch-man, whose reality has been betrayed the most, doesn't know what
to do with his betrayed life, and doesn't know where he went wrong. He
used to live so nicely tucked on his little house, with a retouched wedding
picture hung above his bed - "Building of a Temple" - He used
to dress up his children in white shirts and blue skirts for Tito's
birthday celebration, with pioneer's neckerchiefs and caps -
"Pioneers" - and he didn't even notice when "Three Little
Pigs” decided that he was not supposed to live like this and that the
best thing for him would be to put on a uniform and run across the maps -
"The Boy" - even if it means inviting death into his home.
Dejan
Kaludjerović told us this terrifying story using the language of a
great drawer and a mature painter, who mastered his craft. As a thinking
man he states his own sensibility, the language of a painter. Who knows,
maybe Dejan will, in a critical sense, follow the footsteps of Mica
Popović.
